H1N1-related death in central Newfoundland Breaking News print this article
The Telegram

Central Health confirmed today that a 36-year-old female patient from central Newfoundland
passed away Saturday from complications of an H1N1 infection.
The health authority says the patient had an underlying medical condition.
“On behalf of Central Health, I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family
and friends of the patient. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” said Karen McGrath,
chief executive officer with Central Health. “The death of a loved one is a very sad occasion,” she said.
The health authority says out of respect for the family, who are going through a very difficult time and for patient confidentiality reasons, further information with respect to the patient will not be released.

Willie Hunt from Pouch Cove, NL writes: Although I didn't qualify for an early shot on Friday I'm glad I got it then. My biggest fear was that they would run out and I wanted to get one before they did. Now I got nothing to worry about.

Saucy Face from nl writes: A sad day for her family; my condolences. Let's just hope that her untimely passing will be remembered as the fist and last H1N1 death in the province.

joe from nl writes: Willie, unless you get it before the post 10 day requirement, or as suspected you may require a second dose, or it mutates, or you are among the 20% where it won't be effective, or..............

Nathan from Newfoundland writes: Well, it takes nearly a week to build up immunity anyway, so technically you could already have it incubating, or get it still.

My condolences to the family.

Nasty Nate™ © 2009 from St Johns, NL writes: Wonder how happy the selfish are now knowing that by cutting the line and getting a potentially life saving dose meant for others may cost someone else their life. As long as they sleep well at night I guess, since they only worry about themselves and no one else. Pretty sad state of affairs we have going on here now. Just wait till the lines open up next week. No one is going to wait, and I think we are about to see the real ugly side of human nature if last weeks mess is any indication of things to come.

john from MT. PEARL, NL writes: I guess that since I am a primary health care provider and didnt get my shot because I was working and the rest of the population was herded through the lines and were given it anyway I will have to keep on working. There should have been screening done at the clinic not give it to all who show and the nurses were surpirsed when you said no because you were not high risk.... they would give it to you anyway newofundland is always backwards

sandy from nl writes: To: WILLIE HUNT, you state that you did NOT qualify for the shot but you did get it on Friday. I expect very soon you will hear about a young child who died from H1N1 and could not get the vaccine because of shortage....sleep well.

GG from NL writes: First of all, the vaccine takes 10-14 days to be effective. So Willie Hunt, even by skipping the line, you are no more protected today than you were last Friday. My condolences to the family, but the article says this lady had an underlying medical condition, so unfortunately, this could have happened even with a regular flu. I feel so sorry for this family as I am sure the media is going to have a field day with this. I think the population are putting way too much faith in this vaccine. People need to try to prevent this from spreading, by taking care of themselves, and following the precautions.

Linda from nl writes: To Willie who got his shot on friday & didn't qualify. You didn't qualify for a reason, you are healthy & will end up with a mild illness if contracted H1N1. The people who will get really sick & die from this are those with underlying health conditions. You took a shot from someone who needs it more than you. You should be ashamed of yourself.

wendy from newfoundland writes: Way to go Willie, are you proud of your self, taking a dose from some one that might really need it. You should be ashamed of your self to even tell that you took this from some child. Lets hope that it was not incubating in your body before Friday

Shane from NL writes: To Sandy:
Those are some pretty harsh words. If this Willie was given a shot how is he to blame. Wouldn't this be an issue for Eastern Health. I assume if your commenting on this issue you have had, or are planning on receiving the H1N1 shot. Before you do please ask each friend or family member you have if there child has the shot, if one says no you better wait in line otherwise your statement is very hypocritical.

Lorna from nl writes: To the person and persons who did not qualify for the H1N1 shot on Friday and got it anyhow I hope you have a guilty conscience! Boo to you! From those who are waiting there turn.

Mark from NL writes: I think the person writing as Willie from Portugal Cove is trying to get everyone's goat. This person has posted equally inflammatory remarks in CBC.ca.

Probably a sad prank, or somebody wants the public to inadvertently target a Willie Hunt from the cove.

Newfie away from NL from BC writes: This is sad for the family but boy, there is almost a mass hysteria created because of H1N1. It is totally retarded..next year it will be something else. The common strain of the flu kills more people each year.

ps: and Willie, good for you..you've posted on CBC too..should we be sending a congratulatory card somewhere??

margaret haley from St. John's, newfoundland writes: I stood in line for seven hours on Friday to get the shot as I have a Respitatory problem as well as chronic condition, and my daughter who is a nurse and her two small children also got theirs. Most of the people who were in line with me had children who had serious asthmatic problems or other troublesome problems that could affect them should they get the H1N1 virus. What would have been the sense of the parents waiting in line for seven hours to get their sick children vaccinated and not get the vaccine themselves, there is not guarantee that with the vaccination you wont get the virus, so what would these working parent who waited in line to get the children taken care of then did not receive the shot and they contacted the virus then they would still be putting their children in danger. As far as I am concerned everyone had a right to take a chance and hope they would get the vaccination, they would have run out of vaccine by now either way, hopefully next week there will be better organization and preparation for administering the vaccine, did all the members of the government receive their shots and were they all high risk candidates for the H1N1. This is a case where I believe that noone should be turned away from being vaccinated, they too are at risk of catching the virus

jmt from Newfoundland writes: With regards to people admitting they got the shot even though they are not in the priority list, you should be ashamed to even admit that. You do realize you are taking away from the children and the people who are at high risk of getting severe complications. Just because you may get a really bad flu is not a good enough reason to jump the line.

Marie from Nl writes: I am very sad that anyone has to die from this flu. For me it is scary because I am also 36 year old women and have an underlying health condition. But I still don't qualify for the vaccine yet. Very scary!

We love to pat our selves on the back and praise ourselves for being better than other Canadians. Take a bow you selfih Newfies. Look out for number one.
